So now, series against Australia is merely a week away. Mighty Australians are coming, and coming with a desire to turn their fortunes. In last few season, they have lost ashes and couldn’t defend their world cup. But like other teams, its new era for them as well after world cup 2011. Critics say that Australians are no more a power. Their team is in rebuilding presses and they are starved of good players. Ponting is fading, Clarke has not been fully tested yet and young player are struggling to perform.
So, can we predict a 2-0 twenty-20 series, 4-1 or 3-2 one day series and 1-0 test series win for Sri Lanka? Sure we can. After all, it’s a home series for Lanka and against a non-subcontinent team. We can predict further, a whitewash in all three series.
But, before that, Lanka team must have prepared to play some really good cricket. Team had shown good resistant against England, but one or two bad season had cost them badly. Moral is simple- you can’t shows laziness even for a second against quality team. And Australia is indeed a quality team. Also, they are coming with a balanced bowling attack.
So, fundas should be clear for home team- play with a spin heavy attack and make full use of turning pitches. But, it’s not as simple, though. Reason, in last few years, pitches in Sri lanka, has been quite unpredictable. As a captain, you can think, especially in R PREMADASA stadium, Colombo, that win the toss, win the match. Few seasons back, we saw this trend against India. So, dilshan and company must prepare, even if they lose the toss.
Bowling wise, team should opt a attack with variety. Nuwan kulasekera was UN effective in England, but he can be a good weapon against Australians, who prefers fast bowlers, instead of medium pacers. In Pallekele and Hambantota, where ball swings a lot, thisara perera could play a vital role to destroy aussies top order. Ideally, thisara should be in playing XI, instead of non performer’s like- chamara kapugedera or chamara silva. Batting wise, Silva and kapu were pathetic in ongoing provincial tournament, while thisara had shown good hitting abilities in two matches.
Another notable aspect is that Australians middle order looks fragile. Michael Hussey, David Hussey and Steven Smith are struggling with their forms and it put lot of pressure on top order. So, right tactic for home team would be- take 2 or 3 wickets in first fifteen overs and then rattles middle order with spin heavy attack.
So, these are the challenges for Sri Lanka. If they manage to deal with it, then anyone can predict desire result in favor of home team. But before that, as kumar sangakkara says aftenly- do the basics right. It’s as simple as that, actually…
