He could have been a star tennis player. But then he was destined for greater challenges. Tennis wasn't the only sport that got Kumara Sangakkara hooked at an early age.
In fact, he also excelled at badminton and ping pong, and was an exceptional swimmer.
Having represented Sri Lanka Schools at tennis, Sanga had a promising tennis career ahead. But chose his first sporting passion instead - cricket.
So at 7, he joined a private coaching class, the same class that produced the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan.
By the age of 12, he secured a place in the Trinity College U13 team in Kandy. And went on to win the Trinity Lion Award for exceptional battling and wicket-keeping. Later, the highly prestigious RWDE Award for the Best Allround Student of the Year followed.
Since then, for this master strategist, there has been no turning back.
From captaining the Trinity College First XI to recently being selected as the captain of the Sri Lankan team, Sangakkara's love for challenges continues.
