No doubt he is the most talented bowler atm and will go onto great things. He still gets nice action on the ball and it doesnt help if chances go abegging, albeit hard ones. He must focus on using his amazing variations as deception only and appreciate that line and length are the most important things and him, Herath and Randiv will form menacing partnerships.
Mendis has been bloody unlucky. Even after the Indians claimed they figured him out, He troubled Yuvraj Singh. Mahela dropped Yuvraj in that Indian tour to Lanka in Jan 2009, only then did Yuvraj manage to score a few boundaries off Mendis.
What he lacks is the number of revolutions he adds.. He does not turn much though he has many variations. His carrom ball, offie and everything just deviates mildly from the path making it easier for batsmen to play once they are picked.. If he adds more revolutions even though the variations are picked its gonna be hard for batsmen to play him due to the unpredictability in magnitude of spin...
In the 2nd Test match vs India, in India, 2009 - http://www.cricinfo.com/indvsl2009/engin... - Dilshan dropped Sachin Tendulkar off Ajantha Mendis.
I really feel the Sri Lankan team has let down Mendis badly and keep dropping him from the side for no fault of his own.
