Sri Lanka Cricket Quotes

"I think we have Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews. We have Lasith Malinga and Upul Tharanga for the shorter versions. We have enough candidates to pick from. I think the job now is to select a long-term candidate who is able to leave his own mark on Sri Lankan cricket and build the team he wants to build. Also we will be appointing a new coach so it will be nice if everyone starts afresh. I think as a cricket playing country this is the time that we have to plan for the future and the future starts now. Not in another six months' time, not in another year, especially if you are building towards the World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup. When a World Cup ends, it's time for a change in leadership. "

"Cricket has always been the panacea that heals all in Sri Lanka, so winning the World Cup final would be huge for the country. There are times when there is talk of the Indian Premier League, the money involved and everything. But let me tell you, we take pride in playing for our country."

"He (Arjuna Ranatunga) changed Sri Lanka cricket. From having that inferiority complex to giving confidence into the team, he gave that to Sri Lankan cricket."

"When I was leading the U-12 side, CL (Clive Llyod) won it for the West Indies in 1975. Then when Kapil and Imran won, I told myself if India can, Pakistan can, why can't we win the World Cup. So I feel that I am the luckiest out of the lot. I have learnt from all of them - both good and bad tactics. "

"I think the addition of young all-rounders like Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera has been good for the side, and also the emergence of Tillakaratne Dilshan as an opener. It's difficult to compare the sides. In 2007, we had Sanath Jayasuriya firing on all cylinders."

"It was a very difficult decision and a very emotional moment for me when it was decided that Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas have to be left out from the World Cup squad. They've been my team-mates for such a long (time) and they are such fabulous players with great records. But at the end of the day, as a selector, I have to do the right thing. I have to pick 15 of the best available players on current form. Taking that into account, I don't think it would have been possible to include them."

"To win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 would mean everything to me, simply to play in a World Cup final would be fantastic. It’s not about the past or the future, it’s about the isolated moment in time which is the ICC Cricket World Cup"

"I tried my best, but my performances have not been good enough to get me selected. I wish the team very good luck and hope they bring the World Cup back to Sri Lanka again. I haven't finally decided, but I will make my mind up after the World Cup whether to retire from international matches"

"Their (Jayasuriya & Vaas) leaving the game will be a huge loss to Sri Lankan cricket, but I'm sure the current generation will try to fill the gap"

"Leaving Sanath and Vaasy out was a very, very hard decision. A very emotional decision, it's unfortunate to leave out two great players. We wanted the best team to go out and represent the 20 million people of Sri Lanka. Both were naturally upset. I feel they have a great future ahead, a lot to contribute to Sri Lanka."

"We are determined and pretty confident that we have the players to do that (maintain the record). You can't go to the last two Test series (in Sri Lanka). They are a different side and we are a different side. We don't have the likes of paceman Chaminda Vaas and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (both retired). The key will be how our bowlers perform and at the same time the batsmen need to put a big score on the board."

"Melbourne is the best place for us to come and play, it's like playing at home. Today I think there were many more Sri Lankans than Australians to watch the game, so it's incredible to play here. Sydney is also great. Australia has been a great place to come to, but we haven't won enough here, so it's good to get off to a win."
