Sri Lanka Cricket Quotes

"Maybe the pressure from the media and others resulted in dropping a player like Lahiru Thirimanne. But what we should be looking at is the combination of the team when selecting. It's not about 11 players who can hit hard when it comes to T20. The team should be balanced. There should be consolidation in the batting order and there should be someone who could adjust to conditions when they get into situations like this. I think from the players I saw (during the past), Thirimanne had the potential for that role after Sanga (Kumar Sangakkara). If we are looking at the future, we should keep players like him in the team giving them confidence. May be media will criticize when cricketers are failing, and if we are afraid of that and base our selections on that doing many changes that would be a problem."

"It is a period of transition for us, as everyone knows. Mahela and Sanga are not in the team any more. Even when they were there, everyone knew how big they were, how important they were to our plans. Now that they are gone, you have proof. We are missing them a lot. But this is what it is. We need to improve our skills and meet the skill levels of the other teams. We are trying, but it will take more time."

"We have not played to our potential and we do not deserve to be in the final the way we played."

"In 2009 we were preparing for a Test against Pakistan in Galle when Murali got injured. The selectors asked me what to do. I said, ‘Where is Rangana Herath?’ He was playing club cricket in England but the selectors agreed to fly him over and he arrived the day before the match."

"Over my 15 years playing international cricket, I only toured the West Indies twice, aside from playing in ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and the ICC World T20 in 2010, but every time I played here, it was a special experience."

"England didn't hire me to give information on the Sri Lankan team. They have analysts and coaches to do that. I'm quite disappointed to see those comments from the board, to be fair. By the World T20, I would have been out of the one-day team for 12 months, and out of the T20 team almost two years. If the tactics of that dressing room haven't moved on in that time - if they are still playing the same way - then there's a problem, isn't it? There are also a lot of new players in this Sri Lanka team that I haven't played with. But even for the guys like Angelo Mathews, or Lasith Malinga, or Dinesh Chandimal, isn't the challenge to keep evolving?"

"I had a lot of respect and gratitude for Mahela's knowledge, but now he's advisor to a competing team of ours. I'm very disappointed that a national captain, within a few months of retirement, has been retained by another team at a World Cup. You could go to a club, a province, an IPL kind of team, or a county. But this is a World Cup. You can't have a player who has just left your country's team joining a competitive nation. All the contracted players who are playing, once they retire from the game, should have at least 24 months before joining another team for giving advice or coaching."

"I made the decision to step away from top-class cricket only when I knew the time was right for me to leave and hand over the responsibility to younger members. At the moment I am enjoying the cricket that I am playing and I think I am headed in the right direction. The idea was always to step back after a fulfilling career and right now I feel I am having fun still playing in tournaments like the MCL. That was the plan all along and I doubt I will reconsider a comeback."
