Russel Arnold: SLC Contract Saga a Test before the Tests

Sri Lankan cricketers are not a greedy lot. While our results in all forms of the game recently have been underwhelming - and certainly not the type of stuff that justifies ‘pay rise’ – there is a genuine need for the SLC to try and keep pace with countries like Australia, England and South Africa..

Just when Russel looked the BEST SL analyst, he once again takes it to the next level!......

I fully expected him to take the players' side on this instance(understandably as a former player) but he has NOT! Really shows the quality of the guy, when he can be this neutral/fair whereas SL fans and media absolutely going haywire (he actually managed be fair to the crooks like Nishantha too int this column!)

And yes, it's good to see someone with his experience saying that he's not happy with 'agents' in SL, and agents are not a necessity in SL except for Mahela,Sanga,Dilshan and Malinga.

Once again kudos to Russel for ACTUALLY standing middle ground(not just for namesake) and some journos and fans(some commentators on IC too) can learn a thing or two abt how to diffuse a situation rather than adding more hay to the fire!

Count me impressed too on the balance. I would think he is the first recent player to publicly question the agent behavior.

Since Sanath is getting many plaudits recently can i point out i was among the very first and very few people at IC to write supporting Sanath for head selector :)

Arnold says only Kumar, Mahela, Dilshan and Co. But what about Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene, Malinga Bandara and Farveez Maharoof - all the SLC discards - ask them how they got job playing cricket in England. Sri Lanka Cricketers Assoc. said that SLC was trying to get player in to a room and get them to sign contracts and all the players refused because they were not able to understand their contracts. Players pay their agents and managers to handle the important task of reading through contracts and explaining the legal jargon to them. Can't agree with Arnold on this because it does not make any logically sense.

russel why did you not ask nishantha why he they built a stadium that is the same name of our president in his own home town? slc has no funds to maintain this stadium and because of it and other bad decisions nishantha made that is why the slc is bankrupt... and you are saying u cannot fault nishantha???? u have to be in slcs good books to be a commentator no?

Seems like "balance" and "standing middle ground" and saying you are against agents is more important that the truth. Perceptions, Preferences and Pals must not sway Opinions. Facts are Facts.

Hey Uppercut_7 why are agents "not a necessity in SL except for Mahela,Sanga,Dilshan and Malinga"? Because Arnold is saying so or you know something more? Why are all professional cricketers in the national squad having agents? Better decide after asking the players why they are paying for agents. Arnold is not a player paying an agent. I also want to really know what is going on. Only one journalist and Arjuna are always talking bad about agents but some people say that is because they have a personal problem with a agent. I want to know from a nuetral source and thought Arnold can give some good feedback. I asked him in his column but his answer was that he dont like the commercialised nature of the game and thats why he dont like agents. Check the 2nd question http://www.islandcricket.lk/columns/russel-arnold/answ/243250310
