Player agents ruining SL cricket

Photo
The player agents’ influence in Sri Lanka cricket has taken an ugly twist. The hot talking point is that three agents including a foreigner and two locals are minting millions of rupees from national cricketers while influencing selections of their favourites.

Good if this oligopoly is broken.

the key is to ensure that the next sri lankan captains/senior players are not represented by a single individual.

That would mean we select players and appoint captains based on their agents? Surely people realise that's a ridiculous path to go down?

A player chooses who he wants as a representative/agent, are we going to take their right to choose who they want as a representative away from them?

Then to suggest they are being manipulated, influenced and exploited would suggest that the players are stupid, gullible or complicit in some wrong doing.

Whatever decision a player makes, it's time we start realising it's the player's decision and he is responsible for it. Blaming others (like agents) for a player's decision seems silly to me.

At the end of the day, a player has only two parties defending their best interest when issues arise with the board and the ministry of sport, it's their representative and the players' association.

But we have current and former officials who would like to see players rendered completely defenceless in order to force them to do exactly what the board says.

Reply to Hilal by para ;
1st : No. We need to develop initiatives focussed on an outcome where players are represented by a broader array of agents.

2nd : again No. We need to develop guidelines which should be followed in agent selection. more importantly we need to address the supply side, such that there is wider pool of competent individuals or entities available for player management in SL.

3rd : Stupid no. Gullible sometimes. complicit sometimes. Self interest very much so. We need to create a climate whereby they can achieve self beneficial outcomes without harming the performance of SL cricket.

4th : Agreed. However it is to the benefit of SL cricket that player decisions are made in an environment where negative influence of group dynamics are minimised.

5th : agree

6th : we need checks and balances in both directions.

my single question to Hilal : do you see the situation where near 2/3 of national team is represented by a single agent as a problem or a potential problem?

background : i dont know the numbers if we look at the top two/three instead of a single agent but i would gues that it is close to 5/6ths. hence why i am harping on the 'single agent'.

btw thank you for allowing divergent viewpoints on your site.

I agree with many things you say in your last comment.

As for the question, "do you see the situation where near 2/3 of national team is represented by a single agent as a problem or a potential problem?"

Only if there's sufficient evidence to suggest that there has been some wrong-doing?

If all the players are signing with a single agent, should we not look at the obvious (the agent must be competent and delivering as promised), as opposed to conspiracy theories?

Thank you for commenting and discussing this topic in a sensible manner.

I would consider such a situation an issue because of multiple reasons. first because all of us are human , when we have power/oligopolistic situation, we will use it to our advantage. you can argue that i cant prove that it has happened in this regard and the current crop of players/agents might not but sooner or later it will happen. this is true whether they are with one agent, one club or even from one school.

second sri lankan cricket is an entity based on public trust not a pvt org. hence they hopefully need to be perceived to be fair in addition to being fair. current situation does not meet that criteria. prob % much below this has been judged to be evidence of structural discrimination.

third, imagine a young player coming into the national scene and finds out that the last long term captain, current captain and two future potential captains as well as a majority of players are with one agent. i would think that he would be feeling under pressure to go to that agent as well. Esp since the captain has a big say in who is selected for squad/team, batting position, bowling overs, creating a welcoming culture etc.

finally i dont like the conflict of interest in agents being editors of cricket web sites or commentators. this provides a platform for promoting their own players and disparaging players of other agents.

I think this article looks insane. How come you stop an agent not to be commentator or Cricket website owner. If an agent sign an under 19 player that show how weak the structure a cricket body have. What I feel is that no proper person at the proper place or he was asked not do his job. If its not corrected every one and everything should be blamed.

The whole world laughs at us when we say stupid things like this. If player agents are a problem start an inquiry into it and see what it reveals.

If too many players are signing with one agent then what about clubs?? What about club monopoly?? Many players come from one club?? Then let's look at what school they came from next etc etc!!!

This is our government's cronies at SLC trying to pull one over Sri Lankan citizens to deflect blame and attention elsewhere. Don't be modayos and follow.

Who is the agent who runs a website and what is the site?

Sakthivel ; in professional sports like NBA give me an example where an agent is a commentator or a sporting website editor. if you cant then i guess the article is not insane after all.

anonymous ; monopolisation of national representation by players affiliated to a single entity whether agent, club or school will definitely lead to a less than optimum outcome for the consumer in the long run. its nothing to laugh about.
