How do they know if the crowds will show up for Test matches there without ever hosting one at the venue? Based on what has he made that comment?

SLC shouldn't have spent so much money on building Hambantota, they could have easily renovated Dambulla to ICC standards and could have saved a handful.

I think with Dambulla close to many big towns of the North, North East like Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Trinco and being so close to many tourist attractions will attract more spectators and tourists compared to Hambantota.

Lights at Dambulla are bad and the drainage at Premadasa, even after WC renovations, is garbage.

From the overall cost of hosting WC 2011, almost 30-40% was used in making Sooriyaweva ground, for a far less amount we could have renovated the Dambulla ground. Even after that, logistics cost is very high when we are having a match in Sooriyaweva & for obvious reasons people in that part of the world are not that interested in watching live matches. Are admins fool enough not to identify this in the 1st place ? Answer is no, they might have seen this coming.

But because of the political interference they had no choice other than making a ridiculously big ground which is not suited for cricket. Government had other plans, they were bidding for the common-wealth games at that time & was planning to use MR stadium for that purpose as well. Hence a large playing field, so they could allocate a running-track later. They lost the bid for common-wealth games & Sri Lanka Cricket was left to rot with a huge financial loss.

There are plenty of downsides when you have over sized playing field. I mean, at MR stadium it is ridiculously over sized. Spectators don't get that close relationship with the players, Sixes won't go sailing in to the stands, which is a spectacular sight both on & off the field and not to mention the additional cost involved in maintaining the out-field.

All in all, I can say it is the biggest misuse of finances in the history of Sri Lankan Cricket, and no other than his excellency Mahinda Rajapakse should take that responsibility, since he appointed that interim committee & manipulated the whole WC organizing process through his puppet, the sports minister Mahindananda
