Can't figure out why we can't beat India, says Angelo Mathews

In recent times, playing against India has become a mental block, admitted Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews. After India handed Lanka an eight-wicket defeat in an ICC Champions Trophy semifinal here on Thursday, the young Lankan skipper said: "We had our chat and we knew India were very strong.

"In the sub-continent, he gets the ball to reverse very well, but the cold weather was a deterrent. But we are not making excuses,"

Sounds like an excuse to me.

"Mathews said Sri Lanka were not shamed in losing another semifinal match"

The Biggest reason behind their failure! Lack of shame!

Not sure what part of this is so hard to work out - India are a better team and critically, SL's usual game plan is ineffective against India. SL's game plan is usually a spin based attack backed by Malinga but against India this doesn't work against a quality Indian batting order.

I don't get what's the big deal with SL not being able to beat india in recent times.
Every team has it's time and it keeps changing over the years.

I remember SL beating india almost every time they met in the post-96/2000s and a 'Jayasuriya century' was garunteed every time(same as Kohli vs SL now)

Aussies were untouchable from 1999 to 2005, NOT anymore.

Times change. Get over it peeps!!!!

for once agree with kk, remove the natural bias we have and look at it, India is arguably the best ODI team in the world currently even if we dont they are still the no.1 ODI ranked team in the world and given the changes they have got in the openers plus fast bowling department, its going to stay that way for some time.

SL players need to believe first. This meek attitude when playing cricket wont work, the players need to be aggressive like the 95-96 team, esp whilst on the field. The problem has nothing to do with talent or lack of personnel, its more in the head.

Completely agree with you Sulaimaan & Uppercut. We have talent but we are seem very lacking in game plan & personal. Keep recycling players and Talented youngsters have been kept well out. We should have Horses for causes and never believe one key fits all rather than Think outside square and strip layer by layer of Indias weakness and strength and out smart them. We used to beat them regularly in 90' s so much so even the so called GOD commented after loosing a match answering to a journo that 1000 runs would have been a good total. to defend . A Tounge in cheek comment from a sour looser.

Well we are all talking about players what about the coaches. Marvan Attapattu the batting coach? Arthur was removed by CA because they felt the team has stagnated under him. With Marvan our Batting has not stagnant but reversed for the worse. Does anyone in SL Cricket has the balls to do the same? We do have people like Roy Dias and Aravinda who can do a better job?

Reason is very simple, SL need Malinga and Sanga to perform well to win. Even one dont perform then they will lose to any team any day. But it has become mandatory that Malinga is carted by Indian batsmen so the result becomes default. SL dont have a match winners apart from these two.

I am sure India has 11 Champion players? What a load of crap? It's all to do with the mindset and preparation and game plans. We are lacking in all those..needless to say the end result.

@We can..well written..but forgot about the Personnel!!! We need to get rid of Both Mendises one is supposed to be an alrounder who leaks like a Rotten gutter the other who's mystry is unfolded.I am not sure wheter SRILANKAN CRICKET do postmortem after a each tour or Tournaments? Is there any KPI's on Coaches or Players? If it so ...Marvan peformance as a batting coache will be revealed...and should be shown the door.
