January 09, 2011 (Island Cricket): Chaminda Vaas has announced that he will be retiring from One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 cricket at the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, according to the Sunday Times newspaper in Sri Lanka.
Vaas, 36, was a member of Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup winning side. He is Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler.
After announcing his retirement from Test cricket in 2009, he had hoped to be selected for the upcoming World Cup, before retiring from all forms of cricket. However, Vaas' non-selection in the final 15-man squad has prompted the veteran to contemplate retirement.
"This was going to be my last World Cup, and I was preparing well for it. I knew that I was bowling well in the present context and I thought that the Premier League performance was good enough a platform. Yet, they now have selected the best fifteen, and I will go by that," Vaas told the Sunday Times newspaper in Sri Lanka recently.
"I wish them all the luck they need and also hope that they would bring home the World Cup as we did in 1996."
Vaas remained unsold in the recent IPL auction. He will, however, represent the Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the upcoming English county cricket season, after completing a highly successful campaign with both bat and ball for them last year.

Sad end to a glorious career. He indeed didn't receive the accolades which he deserved. Hats-off to Sri Lanka's greatest Fast bowler ever.

Take a bow Vaasi... I was eagerly waiting to see you in the IPL, but it seems those sociopaths didn't follow Cricket as you were the MVP in county T20. Hats off!!!

Hats off to Mother Lanka's unsung Hero....The artist of Left arm bowling...You are truly a legend.
Take a bow vaasy. A sad end really, wish you could have gone out on a high like Murali. Anyways i always felt you got sidelined too soon. Good luck!
Vaas, I wish you did notfollow Sanath and u retired when u lost your place. I have lost respect for both of u. U wid have deprived a deserving player if u were selected. I admired u very much in your hey day. From Aussie experience, a person is past his best after 35 more so a bowler and u are prone to injury after that.
U are still hoping Nuwan will get injured to take his place.
Ranjan Rodrigo Sydney

Great bowler last session thanks 4 him nation proud
Ranjan Rodrigo is a first class A** H**E.. You should learn how to write and read English before commenting on these pages and mocking great cricketers. Its obvious you got no brains or skills in writing or understanding the game of cricket. GET A LIFE.
P.S - You sound more like your Aussie brainwashed .. Which sucks, because you guys suck like crazy..
hehe Mr Ranjan Rodrigo i forgot that u are a world class cricketer. There are many fools in this world who takes abt cricket or cricketers as if they knw everything. First play the game dn talk. people thnk its a damn easy game but its not.
After he was nt selected what was he supposed to do teach ur children how to play cricket is it. of course he retired.
What I say is Even if Nuwan get injured Vaas should not go. He is not a has been. He still has the talent. bit slow but the talent n skill is still there. He is irreplaceable. Sad scene that he was nt selected.
Well um nt hitting u Mr Ranjan Rodrigo ur one world class player u sud knw better ya. N btw hv the guts to put ur real name with out faking it
