Sri Lankan appointed head coach of NSW

PhotoFormer Sri Lankan Test opener Chandika Hathurusingha, who at one point was being groomed to coach Sri Lanka before being sacked in 2010 due to a dispute with the then chairman of the interim-committee in charge of Sri Lanka Cricket, has been appointed head coach of New South Wales (NSW).

Anthony Stuart, who had been NSW head coach since last May, was informed of the move to not renew his contract after a board meeting on Tuesday.

Hathurusingha will take over from Stuart until the end of the ongoing Sheffield Shield season.

Australian Trevor Bayliss, who has coached Sri Lanka previously, is said to be NSW's prime candidate for the head coach role. But Bayliss is currently involved with the Sri Lanka Premier League T20 team Wayamba, Sydney Sixers, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Shortly before the Sri Lankan cricket board sacked Hathurusingha, the Sri Lankan captain at the time Kumar Sangakkara wrote to the board urging them to retain his services. The letter was leaked to the media. The board however went ahead with its decision, and Hathurusingha later migrated to Australia with his family to take up a role as NSW's assistant coach.

Just prior to relocating to Australia, he was recruited by the Canadian national cricket team to assist them in their 2011 ODI World Cup campaign in Sri Lanka.

The dispute between Hathurusingha and the former chairman of the Sri Lankan board, Somachandra de Silva, arose after Hathurusingha allegedly disobeyed de Silva's orders to remain with the team during an ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, and instead left early to attend a course for coaches in Australia, which the board had permitted him to attend.

Hathurusingha said at the time that his sacking "came as a surprise" to him.

The 44-year-old played 26 Test matches and 35 ODIs for Sri Lanka from 1991–1999. He is a Level 3 qualified coach in England and Australia.

This is excellent news. I hope more follow suit. This way our coaches will get better. I don't know whether Chandika will be involved with the national team with the monkeys in charge at the moment, but some day maybe we will have a Sri Lankan coach in charge.

Good for Hathu but but honestly what was DS thinking and where is he now? Seems he looted plenty, got rid of a real talent and ran for the hills!

I think moving to Australia is the best thing Chandika did for himself and his family. Who would want to work for SLC? You wont know if next month's pay cheque will come on time or even come at all!

Right on Stormy. Where is DS de Silva now? He made his money, destroyed our cricket and now must be relaxing. Blame MR he is the one who put Nishantha and DS in charge.
