Six Sri Lankan players nominated for awards at LG ICC Awards 2012

Thirimanne and Chandimal nominated for Emerging Cricketer of the Year award

Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal have been named in a long-list of nominees for this year's LG ICC Awards, which will be held in Colombo in September.

Sangakkara has been nominated in multiple categories – Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year and ODI Cricketer of the Year.

Lasith Malinga has been nominated for ODI Cricketer of the Year award, and Tillakaratne Dilshan's 57-ball unbeaten century against Australia last year in Pallekele has placed him in contention for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year award.

Ajantha Mendis has also been nominated for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year award, thanks to his six-wicket haul against Australia.

Both Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal have been nominated for the Emerging Cricketer of the Year award.

Umpire Kumar Dharmasena meanwhile has been nominated for the Umpire of the Year award.

The long-list of nominees for each category will be reduced to a short-list in the coming weeks.

The long-lists of nominations were made by a five-man ICC selection panel chaired by former West Indies captain and current chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee Clive Lloyd. The panel also includes former international players Clare Connor of England, Tom Moody of Australia, Carl Hooper of West Indies and Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu.

The individual player awards will be selected by an academy of 32 cricket personalities from around the world. The academy includes a host of former players and respected members of the media, representatives of the Emirates Elite Panels of ICC Umpires and ICC Match Referees.

The awards take into account performances by players and officials for the period between August 4, 2011 and August 6, 2012.

The LG ICC Awards ceremony is now in its ninth year and this year it will be held on September 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004 and 2011), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006), Johannesburg (2007 and 2009), Dubai (2008) and Bengaluru (2010).
