The former Sri Lankan captain passed the 9000-run mark in 172 innings after playing 103 Test matches, beating Rahul Dravid who reached the figure after 176 innings in his 104th Test match.
After Mahela Jayawardene, who has scored 9895 runs, Sangakkara is only the second Sri Lankan to reach the landmark.

According to cric info: Sangakkara reached the 9000-run mark in his 103rd Test making him the second-fastest to the mark in terms of matches after Brian Lara, who reached it in 101 Tests. However, Sangakkara reached the mark in just 172 innings, which is the fastest in terms of innings played.
He is better than Lara

@Chamira Fernando:
Cricinfo's writers should take a look at their own records page - it uses the number of innings, not matches to judge the fastest to 9000 runs: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content...
When a player has two opportunities to bat in one game, why would you consider the number of matches to determine it, right?

Ha-ha... Sanga reached 9000 runs in 172 innings, seven less than demi-god SRT.
And the criteria to judge the fastest to any milestone should be the amount of innings and not matches. The same for bowlers as well.
