Sangakkara to deliver historic Cowdrey Lecture
By Staff Writers
May 17, 2011 (Island Cricket): Kumar Sangakkara will create history when he delivers the 11th MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on July 4.
The 33-year-old will become the youngest speaker to deliver the lecture and the only Sri Lankan and only active cricketer to do so.
“Sangakkara will speak at the Nursery Pavilion at Lord’s the day after playing against England at the Home of Cricket in the third NatWest One Day International,” a statement from Lord’s said today.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Geoffrey Boycott and Imran Khan are among notable speakers to have delivered the lecture.
“Sri Lanka have been so consistently successful in world cricket that it is very appropriate that a distinguished cricketer from this beautiful country should be giving the MCC SoC Cowdrey Lecture,” Christopher Martin-Jenkins, the current president of MCC said.
“Kumar Sangakkara is widely respected in cricket not only as a brilliant player but as a highly intelligent one.
"His views on topical matters will be truly illuminating and many people will be looking forward to hearing what he has to say.”
