Did Sanga's Strategy work?
This was a post by me on Russel Arnold's forum on Dec 22, 2009, just thought of sharing my views here too..
"Well Sanga seems to be handling a very tough team, especially having the legends who are least performing at the moment. However, i guess he is a smart captain and is not afraid of trying new things. Especially the youngsters.
He dropped Sanath down the order and had Tharanga open with Dilshan... AND it is working well so far... on the other hand Sanath failed down the order too, and he took the opportunity to make him sit out... He played Suraj Randiv who is an excellent all rounder in the domestic scene, and he picked up three wkts for us and also broke a brilliant partnership on the 3rd ODI. But should have played Thisera Perera yesterday as a replacement for 'Mat'.
Anyways, I Feel Sanga is not worried about losing matches at this moment, but he is trying to try out every opportunity to get the best team possible for the World Cup..."
Today:
Well now we see it has worked well so far, yet the youngsters need to hold on and try and be consistent. I am just loving the way TP is playing, i second Hilal's post on "Farewell Jayasuriya! Hello Perera". Sanga is leading well from the front, and in yesterdays game against India we saw the way the team was enjoying, eventhough we didnt see Sanga do so. Well however after last nights win, Sanga will join the part too.. With Chandimal coming in too, i hope Mahela replaces Kandambi and wowy i would luv tat team...
Cheers

Welcome to Island Cricket ZAFU484.
You are right. Murali said in a recent interview with The Nation that we are a team in a transitional phase. We had blokes playing after the 2007 WC who should have retired. But now age has caught up with them half way through to WC 2011.
Emotions can run wild when we loose and people begin to blame the skipper. That's the norm in every cricket playing nation. When the Aussies lost the Ashes people were gunning for Ponting's head as well. Sanga just needs to brush that all off.
I am a huge Jayasuriya fan and I just felt at one point that being the legend that he is, and knowing he hasn't been consistent right through his career, Sanath deserved a spot in the team till he decides his time is up. But I now understand that we have no room for an inconsistent batsman, especially a 40 year old one, when the rest of the batting order doesn't take up the responsibility and finish matches.

Slowly things have made me accept the fact that Sana can't go on forever. Its too hard to accept Sana who means cricket to me will not be playing for long now. I too wished he would've gone to play WC 2011, but things don't seem good anymore. If he fits as a bowling all rounder, well and good. Else just like every good thing comes to an end, Sana would retire. He'll never ever be forgotten. The only one of his caliber and kind Sri Lanka has ever produced, and I doubt to see anyone filling his place.

Me too. I am with you guys on this. This is the one cricketer that I would die for. We will never ever see the likes of him. But, I am now resigned to the fact that he can't go on forever, and one can's keep talent such as Thissra, Thirimanne and Chandimal out of the team. So long, my day and night, my price and King, Sir Sanath. You may have a role in 20/20 though.

With the SAARC ( I guess :P) U-21 T20 tournament around the corner in Bangladesh at the end of the month, i am sure there is going to be more talent to be chosen from... Out of the talented young lot, we still have rather, i still have four more super talented youngsters in mind, Sajith Pathirana, Sohan Boralessa, Ashan Priyanjan and Nisham Mazahir.
I would also like to believe that Sri Lanka cricket is heading the right way, and i hope we stay on.
Cheers

Make a note of Chilaw Marians & ex. Anandian DNA Athulathmudali, he is worth for 20-20 he will be the most destructive batsman if he uses his brain properly. He is bloody clean hitter.

I am sure there are more to name out, and i would like to call these lads lucky. Especially that there are more media coverage of domestic cricket nowadays for all of us to analyze and make noise as to why are these performing cricketers not in the national squad. Cheers
We will miss sanath.
