Wrong tactics caused defeat
In hambantota, batting second and chasing a three hundred plus target, has always been difficult. So when sri lanka started run chase, some wise adjustments were needed. Surely, against a huge total, upul tharanga was clearly not a ideal choice to begin the inning with dilshan. So obviously, some changes were needed, such as mahela could have opened the inning, or young chandimal could have came at no. three position, instead of kumar sangakkara. But unfortunately mahela jayawardene, a highly praised captain in modern cricket, opted a routine path.
Yes, mahela can defend his decision, as sanga made a fighting century. But, in regards to the match situation, his century was never going to be a match winning knock. Instead of that, a fluent 40, 60 from young chandimal, could make a difference. And, if they have already decided to permanently fix chandimal at no. four, mahela could have opted to bring himself at the top.
Bringing down tharanga should have been a wise decision, as his last five innings shows the scores of 2, 4, 0, 18 and 10, suggested that he is horribly out of form. Plus, his struggle against a quality left arm bowler, now has been a exposed factor in his batting, and India have two quality left arm pacer it this tour- zaheer khan and irfan pathan.
But, mahela, this time at least, failed to judge the situation. As a result, in a 5 match series lanka in one down now. As it happened in Australia recently, now mahela and co. will be looking to reverse the batting order, but the question will remain even then- why they didn’t reverse the tactics in very first match itself.
