Though he has played just four first class matches, it is right time to introduce Bhanuka Rajapaksa into national team, especially when next twenty-20 world cup is not too far away.

Just like any other sports, cricket also needs administrators, who shows the vision for future, especially when it comes to choose promising players. As Australian selectors inserted Michael Clarke into the national team and Indian selectors did the same with virat kohli, suresh raina and sourabh tiwari, it’s obviously to expect same thing from Sri Lankan selectors. Thus, a question comes in mind- hey, when will they introduce bhanuka rajapaksha into the international cricket?

Yes, we r talking about the royal college left hander. If its true, that very few players in world cricket, manages to create hype, even before being properly introduced in international scene, surely bhanuka names will feature in the list. Born on October 24, 1991, Colombo, the 19 year old dasher knows just one kind of cricket- attack and destroys the bowlers. Naturally, with this kind of brutal approach towards cricket, currently he is one of the most talked upcoming players in Sri Lanka cricket. He himself compares his batting style with Australian’s great Adam Gilchrist, and his fans, and who watched his dazzling batting, compares him with Sri Lanka’s own Sanath Jayasuriya.

Off course, selectors, as well as his fans, can urges that he is too young to introduce in world cricket. After all, he has played just four first class matches till now. So how can you include a player, who is in his early days, even in domestic cricket? Well, no doubt it. He still has to get domestic cricket experience first. But Sri Lankan selectors should keep an eye on future situations as well. As scheduled, next twenty-20 world cup will be held in Sri Lanka in September 2012. It means, selectors have only 14 month to build a team for the fastest edition of cricket. His birth date is 24 October 1991, means, by next twenty-20 world cup, his age will be touching 21. Now, dinesh chandimal, thisara perera and Angelo Mathews, all were inserted into national team, when they all were touching 21. So, it is look like a general age criteria of selectors, when they choose a talent. So, there is no harm, if they select bhanuka as well.

Also, there is should be no hurry to choose him for one day cricket as well. Select him for twenty-20 matches first and see how he goes. If all goes well, make him a permanent fixture in twenty-20 squad. By doing so, he will be ready to face world class bowlers in world cup. Australian selector’s opted same strategy with David Warner and it paid off big time. Now, after gaining great confidence from twenty-20 internationals, Warner is on his way to establish himself in one day cricket also.
So, there is harm to do same experiment with bhanuka as well. A true talent should not be judged by age factor alone. And surely, bhanuka is a true talent. Maybe, he will struggle against international bowlers initially. But if selectors except, that he is a raw talent, just like dinesh chandimal, there should be no panic situation. Bottom line should be that he is a future prospect. So, there is no logic to delay his arrival. Also remember, there are agents of IPL franchises in every cricket playing nation, who extensively search new talents. So, there is a possibility that any IPL franchise could opt for bhanuka.

If it happens, even with the permission of SLC, it would be same. Genuine talents deserve right beginning. And right beginning for bhanuka, is that, he should start his international career with his country. So, it is right time to introduce him properly. Sri Lanakan selectors, are you listening?

He should be given a chance at A team level before being thrown in to international cricket. It simply too big a gap for a young guy to walk straight in to internatinal cricket with 4 first class games.

I think we should give him some time. Let him play in the Sri Lanka A and show his role in the national side.
