I was doing a bit of research, and im sure many of you have done this already, but I just wanted to share the proper names of these teams rather than the ones they have been associated with already:
Uva - Badulla
Wayamba - Kurenegala
Basnahira - Colombo
Kandurata - Kandy
Nagenahira - Eastern Province (Unkown City)
Uthura - Dambulla
Ruhuna - Hambantota
I found these on a couple of sites, and was wondering who the marketing genius is behind these names. I think they could've built a lot more interest locally and internationally if they played with these city names.
Anyone konw why they decided to proceed with these terrible names. (No offence to the Sinhalese version of the names, but comon!)
I think the marketing guys should be fired, and they should start a new marketing campaign to drag more people to the grounds.. Im sure if they change the names alone, more interest would be built. I mean a match where you have Colombo Vs Kandy - You dont think that create a little hype?
Would like to know your thoughts. I think the names are utter rubbish!

Bhammer says city based franchises was not an option because they want to take the game to all provinces and have larger pool of players. But then the games are only played into cities: Colombo and Pallekele.

I dont get it? What does Uva have to do with Badulla? Uva is the province? This is a provincial tournament not a city based one?

I'm having a doubt in this method as well. No wonder it will attract crowds from the main cities. But I dont think a Gampaha guy would support Colombo or a guy from Matale would support Kandy.
I feel provinces are OK. They should've started marketing at least a month ago. Promote provincial teams in the respective provinces with songs, banners etc.

I think the province is more relevant to wider audience and thus a better choice.
I would not rename UVA to badulla. Badulla doesn't mean anything to me I have no relatives anymore, I dont have any friends and there is no interest at all. But I am a UVA boy and live 1 hours away from Badulla. Keep those provincial names also do your research correctly as Uthura is not Dambulla it will be Jaffna and if you do your research well then you would want to call it Yalpanam instead of Jaffna. Same with Ruhuna the main city inthe southern district is Galle. Hambanthota is not even desly populated and those who live there have other things to worry about rather than cricket. (I'm sure there will be a good percentage who doesn't watch cricket/dont have tv).
Come on man stop wasting time and do some research.
