What is Mahela doing at No 3.

Mahela Jayawardana is a really good stroke maker in the Sri Lankan line up. He is fluent on both sides of the wickets, and has the ability of playing innovative shots, like Dilshan.

In the last Pakistan series, when Jayasuriya was absence due to an illness, Mahela opened the innings and scored a brilliant century.

Ever since that innings the Sri Lankan team has decided to send Mahela at No 3, instead of Kumar, to play aggressively, and take advantage of the power plays. Since that century Mahela has failed in his new position at number three.

Sri Lanka has two very attacking batmen at the top in Sanath and Dilshan. That is the reason a No 3 should be playing solidly and more conventionally, and try to consolidate. Kumar is the ideal man to do that.

Since Sri Lanka has an inexperience middle order, Mahela should come at no 4 and try to build a good innings. It's a real waste to lose Mahela's wicket trying to play aggressively in the power plays, don't you think?

In 2006 also Mahela was moved to no 3. He played brilliantly in England but then ran into a lean patch. During the world cup Kumar was again reinserted at No 3. In my opinion Mahela's feet movement was not the best early on in his innings. So safe option is to send Kumar at no 3 and Mahela at No 4. Hope Sri Lankan team management will realize this very soon.

Yup! I think Ryan also wrote about it and I mentioned it too awhile back. He struggles against the new ball outside the subcontinent. He should be looking to come down the order and add stability as a senior batsman in the team.

Mahela is not performing well as expects not only on greener patches but even in Sri Lanka. What was his pathetic show in compaq series.  0 vs NZ, 17 vs Ind, 2. vs Ind. This guy question other batmens form in public. He is not the captain of the team nor an official.

As someone write "Hiding behind Sanath form".  Yesterday final was to be taken. At least all gave a fight exept this sucker. You cant expect careless batting when you come at no.3. He have all the of experience not to throw away the wicket but keep the momentum going as Sanath was beginning to let loose after Dilsha's blitz. What happened gave a lollipop. Then Sanath .

What make my blood boil is thanks to some invicible mantra SL team don't bring dressing room talks to outside. Yes some captains did but I think rarely called names. What right Mahela got to talk about Sanath form when he himself going on a lean patch. What is his average in 2009 season ? Below average I presume.

Yesterday we fought well. It was to be seen on Indians face as they were in panic & pale. Unfortunately  Sanga lost his wicket in a rare way. Power play was not taken at a proper time. Anyhow no one can win all matches. But that was close.

Not bad to send Mahela to A team as they sent Sanath against NZ prior to compaq cup.

To be fair to Mahela, he didn't just criticize just Sanath's form.

I read that article too, but the way I interpreted was, Mahela was talking about everybody at the top in general (including himself), he wasn't particularly criticizing Sanath Jayasuriya.

Yes he is not the captain anymore, or an official. C'mon guys, give the poor bloke a break. He was asked about his opinion so he gave it. This is not the first time Mahela wrote an article and nobody batted an eye lid before this.

Don't make Mahela pay for all SL Cricket sins. Sri-Lanka lost, so what? it's Cricket somebody has to lose and India did better on the day. He is going through a bad patch, he may not be the best ODI batsman Sri-Lanka has. But don't over look the fact that he is a classy player and his captaincy took us to the WC finals in the not too distant past and won us the Asia cup last year.

Whatever happened to the saying you guys keep coming up with "Form is temporary, class is permanent"? or does that only apply to players you like?

My opinion anyway, because I am strongly against crucifying any individual player every time we lose a match or a tournament

It is well known no team can win all the time and this law applies to each player. Lean patches, riding high applies everyone.
Read the underlined sentence, who the hell is Mahela to call rounds. (Under) statements like this put more pressure on Sanath.
Point 2 is, Is Mahela performing well ? NO. His average for 2009 season is lower than Sanath, still this big headed guy think he an authority to make negative comments about fellow players.
Or is it a coward way to put all eyes & minds on Sanath form he can hide his own failure. Yesterday match was  a good example for Mahela's form & attitude towards the game / win. If Mahela consider himself as savior of Sri Lanka cricket, what was his contribution ?

This not personnel against Mahela. We are in forum to critize or praise players.

Part of Mahela Jayawardena interview:

"It's a tough call for someone like Sanath. We have all known what a performer he is, so it's hard for the selectors. At the end of the day it's up to individual players to realize the decision they have to make. The guys around him are scoring runs and are putting a little bit of pressure on him. It's a team call and we will see how it goes."

God save Sri Lanka cricket

As a senior player he should be more consistant. We can't efford form slumps from him like this. Any way he should come at no 4 or 5 at odis. It's ok to come at no 3 in t20

Ur interpretation is quite bad . It is obvious that he was pointing his finger towards sanath. Even a school kiddo would realize that once he/she goes through it."Mahela was talking about everybody at the top in general (including himself), he wasn't particularly criticizing Sanath Jayasuriya." lol is that what u realize when u read it? Mahela particularly mentioned how the pressure is being imposed on sanath. In most of his statements he alluded about sanath since he could not accuse directly by mentioning sanaths name Come on SMSD its pretty obvious and i wonder how u misinterpretated his article in this manner. Mahela even alluded that players should retire when time is up , without letting others to make that decision. Now don't tell that mahela referred to all senior players and its obvious its only for SANATH he mentioned given that we all know its sanath who is at his latter part of his career near retirement. I Believe mahela has no right to criticize a fellow team mate in front of the world when he himself is not in a state to criticize others as he has not been up to national level standards.

"He was asked about his opinion so he gave it" Who said he was asked to give an opinion on sanaths performances huh?????? It was just his own wish to write that article and publish on cricinfo and not that some one asked him to give an opinion..Pretty lame the way uve meddled with that particular section...

Anyway being SL cricket fans does not necessarily mean that we must close our eyes and shut our mouths when u see one of ur players doing something which could be catastrophic in terms of team spirit and all the rest of it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

To me, Mahela is a great player  who is no 3 in the Test ranking who is having a bad run. Players get out in all sorts of ways. I have seen many times recently Sanath doing many irresponsible things too.

Mahela was just voicing what lots of people (those whose opinions really matters) were saying recently. There is no crime in it.

I  don't really care about  his current ODI form, or the lynch mob. He has plenty of time to get back into form.

Well i dunno wht u indicate by saying jayasuriya doing inappropriate stuff..I don't believe he had done anything like criticizing his team members by alluding  or by in any other means publicly. I can't argue on that since u seem to be following em everywhere and to be knowing every lil bits they do. But mahela being a senior member of the side is not expected to spread prejudiced ideas alludingly such as sanath should retire and he is at the edge of being expelled of his team ..

What i simply tried to tell was that before pointing his forefinger towards sanath alludingly regarding his performances mahela must know that rest of his fingers point towards his direction revealing his pathetic performances. It's simple as that and i believe majority of the ppl in this forum accept that mahela did an inappropriate thing. True everyone has the right to express their views and reveal wt they have inside . But not in a hypocrytic fashion as mahela did . Yes anybody can criticize any person. But he/she must be fully aware of the fact the eligibility to do so. Clearly mahela is not eligible to criticize sanath based on his performances as he has been yards beneath sanath during the past year.

I wonder why  u say u dont care wht his present ODI form is. Well we do care since he is not in the team as a passenger but to score runs gracefully. Do you know why his present form matters?? Coz it is the barrier that bounds him from criticizing sanaths present form.. Simple as that..
