ICC Champions Trophy 2009 - Selection Blunder

Sri Lankan squad for the champion trophy is as follows.

Kumar Sangakkara (captain), Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardena, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapegedera, Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Kulasekera, Thilan Thushara Mirando, Thilina Kandamby, Dhammika Prasad, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga.

Including Upul Tharanga in the squad is a real blunder. Surely Sanath Jayasuriya and Dilshan will open the innings in every match. So why include Tharanga?

He will just be a passenger in this tour.

If one of the opening batter gets injured, someone like Mahela or Kumar can open. Tharanga's place should have gone to a fast bowler, Maharoof or Dilhara Fernado.

Lasith Malinga was also not doing great in ODI matches recently. Maharoof has the batting ability too. He did well against touring Pakistan A team.

I am not sure why you have mentioned Dilhara Fernando. It should be given to Isuru Udana, who had a given only 20/20 tournament. He has good potential career. Do not forget Upul Tharanga battered well in Pakisatn tour. I think he deserved the spot. I think Malinga Bandara should have been picked instead of Ajantha Mendis. Ajantha Mendis is most overrated player in the side.
It may be a good testing tour for many players such as Mahela/ Malinga/ Sanath/Mendis. Let get together and back our tem. I think it is knock out basis, is it?

My point is Upul will be a just a passenger cause it's certain that Sanath and Dilshan are going to open the innings. Our fast bowling line up is week. That's why I said his place should have gone to a fast bowler. Not sure whether Isuru is ready at international level. Poms, Saffies and New Zealand can struggle against Mendis. In my opinion he should be persisted littel more.

rather disturbing how Maharoof has been dropped for the past few tours, when he has been a relatively consistent performer right throughout!

I think the idea would be trying to fit in Tharanga in the middle order since the batting has been woeful in the middle order or may be Sanga rates Tharanga very highly, I don't see him opening for SL any time soon, Mahela might get the nod

Change your name Maharoof like Dilshan & Suraj Mohamood. Maybe you will get a chance.

Upul Tharanga's inclusion is a very wise decision. He may not get a chance to play. But in south african conditions, upul should be in the playing XI. He is a better player in fast tracks. He uses the speed in the ball and just do timing brilliently. Dilshan & Mahela will probably fail in this tour. So tharanga should be given the opening or one down slot if SL wants to win champions throphy. He can solidify the top order. He is a match winner like Sanath Jayasooriya. When he score a 50 or 100, it is 90% sure we are winning the match. In last world cup, he was out of form. But still he has contributed well to carry SL to final. His half centuries against England, India and New Zealand is very very crucial.

Upul has technical problems regarding his batting. He has to correct those. He may do well in flat tracks.

Wesley, you are right.

Unfortunately we have to tolerate these kind of mentality from people like Aifiduis & the anonymous guy who was advising  Maharoof to change his name.

They have no interest in Cricket  but just come here to stir some trouble with their idiotic remarks that has no foundation what so ever.

Dislhan changed his name long long time ago. He was sometimes selected for the team (when in form) and sometimes not, even after changing his name (when he was out of form)

Suraj Mohammed is not currently needed for the national squad as we have players who are much better than him. He is still very young, just like several other promising young non Muslim players, he may or may not get a chance to play in the national team.
We never know.

Maharoof has been injury prone for some time, so replacing another good player with Maharoof will be a liability.
Angelo Mathews (who is of Tamil origin and a Catholic) is far better than Maharoof, being so young, he will be a far better long term investment for SL Cricket.

We are blessed with so many talented players, but they can't all be in the team at the same time.

Yesterday's win over South Africa proved that we have the best 11 playing out there.

So please don't waste you time anymore inciting racial/religious hatred or with your half baked conspiracy theories here on this forum.
