Super Eight - Groups

Group E Group F
 A1  B1
 B2  A2
 C1  C2
 D2  D1

The top two ranked teams in each group are seeded 1 and 2. They will retain this seeding for the Super Eights stage, irrespective of whether they finish first or second in their group, unless they are knocked out by team 3 in their group. In this instance, team 3 replaces the position of the team they knock out.

For example, if Bangladesh wins Group A and India comes second, for the purposes of the Super Eights, India will still be A1 and Bangladesh will be A2. If for example, Ireland qualifies instead of India, Ireland will become A1.

This formula provides spectators with certainty as to the location of team matches.

gosh, that group for india looks like a couple of practice games for them lol...obviously india and bangladesh are through in that round.. however, its t20.. you'd never know...

my predictions are as follows

Group A - India and Bangladesh make it through with India on Top

Group B - Pakistan and England with Pakistan on Top

Group C - tough decision.. although I have a feeling the games between Sri lanka and Australia will be interesting.. I also think West Indies have a really good chance to top the group. They normally do really well in T20..  BUT, im gonna go on a limb here and say with recent form of the teams players its Sri lanka and Australia..

Group D - South Africa and New Zealand with South Africa on top

Semis -- I would deffinitely say India, Pakistan, South Africa and the 3rd spot is a battle between Sri Lanka, Aussie & New Zealand, although England are on home grounds, so you'd never know. I also may be wrong.

Finals - Sadly, I will say India will make this spot, but the team challenging them is yet to be seen.. its a gut feeling.. they really have a good team..

Our group may look tough, but don't forget that Australians lost to Zimbabwe in the last Twenty/20 tournament, lol.
Current Aussie team is nowhere threatening as Aus  team 2 years ago.

I'll be there to watch the match, although I am not a great Twenty/20 fan, I am looking forward to attending the first Srilankan national game since that dreadful day in Lahore against the Pakistan match.

I suppose, since the match against South Africa at Lords on the 3rd is a warm up game , that doesn't count.

But will be interesting to see how Srilankans perform against South Africans.

I think India will win again.  If we can't win it. I prefer India to win it anyway.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have agreed to move their World Twenty20 warmup forward two days to make it part of a two-game fixture which would be more attractive to fans.

The switch means the match will be played June 2 at Trent Bridge with England's warmup against Scotland scheduled immediately after.

Oh, O.K. thanks.

Hope our boys are not going to be delayed on the way back from Nottingham to London the following day (for their game against South Africa at Lords on the 3rd). If they play the first game of the day, then they should be able to get back to London  around 8 or 9 at night.

For some reason, I thought they were playing Bangladesh at Oval (South London), maybe I am thinking about the group game the Saturday after.

pakistan is going 2 win

VARUN MATHUR's picture

dude u r absolutely right.. u made outstanding prediction.. i ndia will win this t20 wc....

Indian's picture

Sri Lanka may be in a tough group initially but in the second round they have a relatively easy group
2 teams from pakistan newzealand srilanka and bangladesh will reach semis
compare that to india's group
2 teams from australia south africa india and england will reach semis
even if for sake of simplicity we assume that england will lose all their matches , India will have to defeat either south africa or australia to reach semis
This wont be easy

If our group is the group of death, then what does that make Scotland's group? I mean, we might have it hard, but at least we aren't Scottish :o...

Looking forward to going to the warm-up game on Wednesday. Hopefully everything goes well. Anybody who lives in the UK going?

I think New Zealand have a very good balance. Hard-hitters, and medium-pacers who can take the pace off the ball. I predict an India/South Africa - New Zealand final...

Excellent.

It is a shame that all the Group C matches are being held at Trent Bridge. But I see the C1 and C2 matches will be at Lords, so maybe I can scrounge money to go see that if there are any tickets left.

Should be exciting though. I hate Twenty20, and I think that it needs cutting down, but, I have to admit that it is important in cricket's future, for one way or another.

I on the hand love all forms of cricket. Can't get enough of it!! Ha ha!

To win any competition we must be good enough to beat all teams neh?

Tough group or not we have to have that mentality that even from match one its a fight to the finals.

I guess I'm forced to like Twenty20 purely because if I want to continue following cricket, I have to.

As for our group, if we beat the Windies, we are through. However, we lost in the Windies last time we toured, and they are a very hit and miss side, who tend to do well in limited overs cricket.

They have pace in the form of Edwards, and Taylor, who are very dangerous, and spin in Benn and Gayle.

They aren't dissimilar from us by any stretch of the imagination. They have exciting players, a big-hitting opener, and a relatively young squad.

You know what? They probably will.

Then again, they do say that Twenty20 has the potential to be a good leveller.

Well guyz its gonna be a tough contest between Pak, Ind, South Africa and Black cats (NZ). Pakistan should reassemble their batting order hopefully by not relying on big bets :-D...........Afridi could be better option to start-off with their natural 'Boom Boom' style., must give him a chance.(my opinion)....
India......goochhhh such a strong skeleton they got after IPL, buch keh rahena reh babaaaaa....... However, SA will be agresstive as compare to last world cup...Black cats could be a tough call..

Anonymous's picture

i like to say pakistan but i think final would be aussi vs india and this time aussi will beat india in final

Anonymous's picture

Ccontrary to logic, the arrangement of teams in the second round groups were not based on performance in the first round, but based on the seedings which depend on the performance of the teams in the last World Cup.
Initiallly
Grp A -INDIA, BD, IRELAND
Grp B -PAK, ENG, NETHERLANDS
Grp C- AUS, SL, WI
Grp D- SA, NZ, SCOTLAND

Later
Group E –A1, B2, C1 and D2
Group F – A2, B1, C2, and D1

To understand the depths, consider this. If India, England, Australia and South Africa top their group by winning their matches, they will end up in the same second round group. The others with one win each will be in the other. But that’s not all.
Let’s assume that England loses to all the other teams in its group. India beats South Africa which beats Australia which beats India. And say India and Australia reach the semis by a better NRR. In the other group, Pakistan beats everyone, and the others share their wins and one team (say New Zealand) qualifies by a better NRR.
So, you will have South Africa not reaching the semis despite four wins and New Zealand reaching the semis with just two victories under its belt. In fact, the Kiwis could win the tournament and still not overcome South Africa’s record.
This means we will have to reconsider the predictions from the 2nd round onwards:
Group E (India, England, Australia, South Africa): India has a good record against the other teams - England 1-0, Australia 2-1 and South Africa 2-0. So India qualifies. England have lost to both Australia 1-2 and South Africa 0-1. So England are out. Australia have a 3-3 record against South Africa. But surprise, South Africa has a better Twenty20 record than Australia. So South Africa goes through as the second team.
Group F (Ireland, Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand): Once again, let’s eliminate Ireland. Pakistan 1-0 against New Zealand. Kiwis 1-0 (with two Tied matches) against the West Indians. NZ won one tied match via the bowl-out, but WI took revenge later winning the next tied match via the Super Over. Pakistan has not played against the West Indies, but considering the order of victories, we can assume that Pakistan and New Zealand will qualify from the group.
Thus we get
Semifinal (India v New Zealand): India meet their Waterloo. They have not won a single match in three encounters against the Kiwis. New Zealand reach the finals.
Semifinal (Pakistan v South Africa): Pakistanis!. With your previous loss against South Africa, you are exiting the tournament along with India.
And so finally, the final:
Final (South Africa v New Zealand): South Africa have a 2-1 record against New Zealand. So we appoint them the champions of ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2009.
What a difference the seedings make. We suddenly have a new winner. The biggest point is how important it is for India to avoid a match with New Zealand!!!!.

So basically, if we beat the Windies, and make sure that we loose to Australia, we get a relatively easier task in the second round?

zahir shah kazmi's picture

pakistan shuold open with kamran akmal and new batsman shazad ,shahid afridi should be no 3. and shahid afridi should play like a test match. so he can stay there for long time . result pakistan will win the world cup for sure

zahir shah kazmi's picture

shahid afridi i hope you will open tomorrow against england. And stay calm for three overs and then go berzerk for sixes as you do from the first ball.you need to learn how to calm your nerves down take a long deep breath few time before you hit the ball

We start off against Pakistan, and if we loose, we have to beat Ireland and New Zealand.

We need to beat Pakistan to make this group straight-forward...

So Pakistan has done it after 1992 world cup.Zahir Shah you were right when you said Afridi should come at No.3 and play the game like a test match and Pakistan could win the cup. This has come true according to our wishes. The Pakistan is wild with joy and excitement. All suicidal bombers are forgotten and there is glowing faces in every corner of our country. The cricket world should give now give Pakistan what is due.Give us our world cup matches. All foreign teams should come to Pakistan to play;and let our cricket flourish.Let our talent in cricket come to surface.Long live Pakistan cricket.
