Farewell Jayasuriya, Hello Perera!

Sanath Jayasuriya was rightfully given another go in this series. It was however sad to see the great batsman fail once again.

Consistency was never Jayasuriya's forte, his style of play and the risks involved inevitably meant that Jayasuriya would fail more often than not.

There was a time in the Sri Lankan line up when his failures were overlooked. Because of his ability to blow away the opposition and win matches on his performance alone, Sri Lanka could afford the failures. Those days are long gone now and Sanath's role has been taken up by a new generation.

Tillakaratne Dilshan's performances in 2009 as an opener meant there was no room for an inconsistent pinch hitter.

As an ardent fan of the man, even I now see that Jayasuriya's time in the Sri Lankan team is up.

As hard as it is to digest, ODI# 2935 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkota may be the last time we see Sanath Jayasuriya in ODI colours for Sri Lanka.

But as we bid farewell to a legend, the same ODI match has presented us with possibly one of the most hardest hitters Sri Lanka has seen in recent times.

Thissera Perera's whirlwind 37 runs off just 14 balls today appears to have launched the young man's career and guaranteed a place in the team, all in his very first game.

As we bid farewell to one master blaster, another appears to have been born.

I think sanath got paid a lot by BCCI. Saw the way he batted? Saw his bowling?? Pithcing ball sooo short!?? He must have got paid well to under perform.

Don't question the man's integrity because he isn't playing well? That's wrong. You're basically saying he's a cheat.

Good post. I totally agree with you on the Sana aspects Hilal. I like your optimism but, with respect to Perera, I really don't think we should judge Perera this fast. We've seen pinch hitters come and go in the past, and I think Perera has a long way to go before we even begin to ask him to fill Sana's shoes (or make comparisons with the legend). We can always hope though.

Pinch hitting has changed now with power-plays in the middle. Perera can bat in middle order, not open.

Yeah! Long way to go before he can fill Sanath's shoes. I was just pointing out that with Thissara we now have a guy who hits it so clean. He doesn't need to open and play the pinch hitter role, but he can do some damage in the batting power-plays neh?

Yeah, I agree. He definitely seems like a bright prospect. I just hope he doesn't get sidelined. He needs to be tried out more. I reckon they should pick him for the World Twenty20 in a few months and give him some ODI exposure. Even the the shots that didn't connect well were quite effective!

Very sad to see him go. We love you and will miss you Sanath. All the best but time to stop being greedy now. Please retire and play only 20/20.

This is what I have been telling all the time. 40 yrs old Sana never gets younger. We need to give young players a chance to find out next master blaster. Look at the fielding of Perera, Sana can't even bowl properly.
I am happy at least some are changing their mind & attitude towards Sana. All of you guys shit on me when I raise the issue abt Sanath. Please give Jayasuriya next game for his farewell match. I hope he will do well.

To be fair to Sanath, this 'never getting younger' phenomenon doesn't just apply in his case. Surely!

its funny how all you damn cricket pundits are giving Sanath a funeral and taking about how some little runt is going to replace him. Same thing happened to Sachin a few years back with Rohit Sharma being proclaimed as the next Sachin. Sanath isn't done yet and he'll come back with a bang and prove all you wrong. With all due respect Hilal i never thought you would ever believe such nonsense. The day Sanath retires is the day that the Pinch hitting Sri Lanka was so famous for becomes a thing of the past no one will ever be able to fill his shoes. There can only be one master blaster.

Ha ha! If you read my post carefully you will realise that it's not about some "little runt" replacing Sanath? It's about Sanath failing, and a hard hitting debutant succeeding, in the same match.

Hilal
this is Sri lanka. He will never retire till the wc. I am sure of it the way he acted in the past. Retired in test cricket once then came back again through the back door. Why he is appearing for political ads. He is a good friend of Namal Rajapaksha too. Participate in tharunyata hetak functions. He will definitely play with political assistance.

Anonymous's picture

my apologies for my misunderstanding Hilal my thoughts were more directed to the statement "As we bid farewell to one master blaster, another appears to have been born." There can only be one MASTER, wasn't a certain mahela Udawatte proclaimed the next Sanath by some?

another belligerent knock from perera today, taking us over the finishing line with sammy. and he even knows when to hit it in the air to felders (caught off a free hit!)
with mathews injured we need perera coming in lower middle order for some bombastic hitting

When Hilal penned this post I thought the man is crzay to trust a newcomer to be born as Jaya2. Welll I have seen enough in these 2 innings. This young man may be the most exiciting talent in ODI's that we have seen in Lanka. He gives us our biggest lack of late order power finishers. I am salivating to have Mathews at 7, another power hitter and Thisssara at 8. Wouldn't it be nice if Maha can re discover his true destiny and join this duo. We would be as good as India, RSA and the Oz any day. Bring them on.  Farewell Jayasuriya (he still could have a role for Lanka) and Hello, I mean really Hello, Perera. I love you man.

In today's Tri-Nation match, after Randiv got out, Samaraweera was loosing the plot he was throwing his bat at everything. Thissara walked up to him and said "athey thiyenne hondata gahamu," meaning the match is ours play sensibly.

For a newcomer to have that kind of confidence and to show such maturity, this guy is one to watch out for in the future.

 Thissara Perera

I'll call him lil Sana...I missed his batting, Hope Someone uploads his blitzkrieg ! You were spot on Hilal. Last year Mendis was the sensation, This year its gonna be Thissara. I was thinking what happens if he's allowed to open with Dilshan ? It'll be a mayhem.  I wonder how SL Produces such unorthodox cricketers over and over again.  Happy to see SL Cricket is in safe hands even if key players retire. One man goes and another better one enters. Cheers !

Ha ha, Dunno when my Sanath blog will be shut for using copyrighted materials in every post. Wont think of opening another blog. There won't be a player as Sana who would impress me till my end.

Still too early but he has shown some character for SL batting. Back to golden rule: ' we must give a chance to youngsters to see their performances'
